Jane Kleeb
Bold Nebraska is an organization whose goal is to stop the Keystone XL pipeline. Bold Nebraska is made up of many Nebraskan citizens who are unhappy with the idea of the pipeline running through 1,700 miles of their state. The founder of the organization, Jane Kleeb, is amongst this group. Jane works on reaching out to the farmers of the community, urging them to stand up against the pipeline. Jane appeals to the farmers as she explains that 10,000 cows could be at risk of dying because of construction of the pipeline (Elbein). The planned route for the pipeline is not far from a large feed lot in Nebraska, if a leak or spill were to occur all of the cattle could die. Kleeb is concerned with the environmental threats of a potential spill that the pipeline brings along with the bitumen oil being carried in it. Similar to the view of Tim Kaine, Kleeb holds the same opinion about the dangers of tar sands oil. Both agree that using and promoting the use of this oil would just set the United States back on the nationwide mission for cleaner energy. Jane is also very passionate about the fact that there have been insufficient studies done to test the safety of the Keystone XL pipeline. Kleeb testified in front of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, she argued “This pipeline is risky. It is massive and we literally have no long-term study on how tar sands affects land, water, or our health” (Weeks, 565). Through Bold Nebraska Jane, along with her community, has a mission to “mobilize new energy to restore political balance” (Bold Nebraska). So far they have been successful in keeping the pipeline off of their land and spreading awareness across the country of the potential environmental damage of an oil spill in order to stop the pipeline.
